Traditional Yogyakarta charcoal coffee: sweet black coffee briefly infused with the aroma of a glowing lump of food-grade charcoal for a smoky, crackling finish.

Ingredients
- 15g (0.5 oz) coarsely ground dark-roast coffee
- 240ml (1 cup) water
- 10g (0.35 oz) granulated sugar
- 20g (0.7 oz) food-grade lump charcoal, 1 piece about 4cm (1.5 in)
Method
- 1Bring 240ml (1 cup) water to a full boil at 100°C (212°F), then let it stand for 30 seconds (0.5 minutes).
- 2Put 10g (0.35 oz) sugar and 15g (0.5 oz) coarsely ground coffee into a thick heatproof glass or ceramic mug.
- 3Pour in the hot water, using all 240ml (1 cup), and stir for 10 seconds (0.17 minutes) until the sugar dissolves.
- 4Heat 20g (0.7 oz) food-grade lump charcoal over a gas flame or charcoal heat until it is visibly glowing on the surface, about 3 minutes (180 seconds). Do this outdoors or under strong ventilation.
